Rivalry Week

Battle of Brotherly Love, St. Michael’s Playground Throwdown & El Classico are just some of the big rivalry games that will impact playoff qualification & seedings in Week 13.

Rivalry Week is here. While every game is important and 'every point counts', some rivalries are bigger than others. The following is a ranking of this week's rivalry games based on a combination of Off Field Rivalry (OFR, how bad do they want to beat each other in everything that they do), Playoff Importance (PLI, how much impact does this game have for Playoff qualification and seeding), Competitiveness (COM, how competitive is the career H2H record of the rivals). All categories are rated from 1-10. In reverse order:

5. Giorgio v. Jeff OFR 3 + PLI 7 + COM 3 = 13 points (last year's total: n/a; last year's rank: n/a) Senior Bowl. Grey hairs and clear tears. Two disgruntled Owners that had Playoff + Jacket aspirations only a week ago now might only be playing for Consolation pennies. The Brown Sugar Pies are not molding yet, but that Pie isn’t tasting as well as it once did when it was fresh out of the oven and Barkley’s knee was intact. Meanwhile, Jeff’s season could have been preordained. The archetypal rise and fall, if we could bet on such outcomes in the DelFL we would all be rich. So while quintessential-Jeff tries to repeat in the Giorgio Cup, Giorgio (clinging to hope) is trying to sneak into the Playoffs. He needs to win and have Tony lose. It is that simple, or as I am sure Giorgio is saying right now, “impossible”.

4. Del v. Sean OFR 5 + PLI 6 + COM 7 = 18 points (last year's total: 20; last year's rank: 4)

Shanghai Showdown. This rivalry has been a mainstay of Rivalry Week since the advent of such Rankings. One of the brothers is always in the hunt, sometimes both at the same time. This year it is only the Commissioner (like last year) trying to improve his seeding in the Playoffs that he has already qualified for. The White Ghost’s attempt to slide into the Giorgio Cup will require a win and some points scored, not infeasible. But the real prize requires the Commissioner to win + Andrew loss + Jesse loss to become the worst roster ever to receive the 1st Round Playoff BYE.

3. Andrew v. Billy OFR 8 + PLI 6 + COM 5 = 19 points (last year's total: 21; last year's rank: 3)

Battle of Brotherly Love. People tend to forget that Andrew always struggles against baby brother Billy in Week 13. Billy has been Judge, Jury and Executioner of the Baby Seals’ 2-star fantasies time and again. Sadly, the younger brother can’t kick the older brother out of the Playoffs this year, however, he can defenestrate the Seals’ BYE chances with a victory. Of course, the Seals have climbed to the top of Mount DelFL 3 games at a time before, they never have had the BYE; but it sure is easier when you can take the ski lift up one round.

2. Boner v. Jesse OFR 7 + PLI 7 + COM 8 = 22 points (last year's total: n/a; last year's rank: n/a)

St. Michael’s Playground Throwdown. Obviously, this rivalry wasn’t going to catch El Clasico, but it has shoved aside Dead Drop Redemption (Birdman v Kapo) as the #1 contender to dethrone the DelFL’s top game. There hasn’t been much said on WeChat, but behind closed doors the chirping isn’t coming from the birds. Boner is on a worrisome 2 game snide and Jesse is on a 5 game tear, will the trends continue? Both can win and secure the BYE without having to worry about complicated tie-breakers. But more than maybe any year in this rivalry, they both want to just beat the other.

1. Bo v. Tony OFR 10 + PLI 7 + COM 10 = 27 points (last year's total: 24; last year's rank: 1)

El Clasico. Does there really need to be more said than this?……. Tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock, Tony might be off delfl.net, but he’s not ready to turn that clock off.
