O'Donald Beckump

2 New York Giants are generating a lot of publicity this summer

When bleachers collapse because too many fanatics are trying to get a glimpse of a sophomore New York Giant receiver, you can justifiably say that the hype has become irrational. That receiver: Odell Beckham or ‘ODB’ as his sycophants call him, is fantasy football's equivalent to Donald Trump and the GOP primaries. Both of these New York Giants have dominated their respective newswire this summer. To some, Trump & ODB are exciting and an invigorating candidate/draft pick; or to others, they are overhyped and destined to the mediocrity of the past politicians/receivers of New York.

There is no doubt that ODB had a breakout rookie season. His remarkable statistics, in 12 games, were achieved in spite of the anemic Eli Manning throwing him the ball. He isn’t a flash in the pan, and neither is Donald Trump, their popularity increases with every Youtube video. But both Trump’s and ODB’s values are inflated by a fringe following that distorts their real value. In ODB's case, the ‘My Boy’ minority, which includes Owners like Bo, Tits & Squid, assign additional value to ODB based on TD dance moves, the college he attended & meaningless style points. This evokes the scene in Moneyball when the old school scouts are trying to convince Billy Beane to draft a pitcher because he has a hot girlfriend.

Take for instance consensus #1 WR Antonio Brown. The Steelers WR didn’t go to ‘cool’ LSU. He wasn’t on the Madden cover. He doesn’t have ‘swag appeal’, not even a signature dance. All he does is have 100 yard games. But, will he be the first WR drafted in the DelFL? Not if he is still on the board at #12 and bridled Bo has the option of drafting ODB instead.

Trump and ODB, from a publicists point of view, are having optimal summers. But as the GOP will indubitably select a more sensible candidate, I imagine ODB will continue to generate draft buzz and will be drafted too early by the bleacher breaking crowd. Prediction: ODB won’t be a Top 5 WR.
